Winter Tulip Subscription FAQs

1.  How do you grow tulips in the winter in Wisconsin?

Tulips are a flower that are easy to force, if done so properly.  We have converted part of our basement into a tulip-forcing set-up, where all of our winter tulips are grown.  We use our walk-in cooler and supplemental lighting to achieve forced tulip crops from January through April.

2.  If I reserve a winter tulip subscription, when does it start and how often do I get a fresh bouquet?

Depending on which option you choose, you will either receive a bouquet weekly (12 bouquets total) or biweekly (6 bouquets total) during the months of February, March, and April.  Deliveries and pick-ups take place on Thursdays during the winter.

3.  How do I get the flowers?

You can choose to have your flowers delivered locally to your home or workplace-- we deliver to Sparta, Tomah, Norwalk, Ontario, Wilton, Kendall, and Cashton WI zip codes.

You can also choose to pick them up at one of our pick-up locations:  Cotton + Birch Collective in Sparta (Thursday afternoons), or directly from our farm (by appointment).  We are working on a Tomah pick-up location-- stay tuned!

4.  If I give a flower subscription as a gift to someone else, and the flowers aren't in season or ready yet, what can I give the recipient in the meantime?

We've got you covered!

We have gifting cards/envelopes available-- included for free with any subscription purchase-- that explain to the recipient that they will be receiving flowers in the near future!  You hand them the envelope and rest assured that they will be enjoying your gift months later.

5.  How do I sign up?

Starting September 1st, you can find tulip subscriptions in our online shop with special Early Bird pricing, which is effective through 9/30.  After 9/30, regular subscription prices take effect, but subscriptions remain available until all spots are filled.  Due to limited growing space and number of bulbs, tulip subscriptions are limited.

A few weeks before your subscription starts, you can expect an email or a phone call to confirm the details and to coordinate delivery/pick up dates.

6.  What if I won't be home to receive my flower delivery?  Or what if I'm going to be gone for several days?

We typically make our deliveries on Thursday mornings.  If for some reason that needs to change (due to weather for example), we reach out well in advance so that there are no surprises!

Because winter tulips are delivered during Wisconsin's coldest months, (and tulip blossoms shouldn't freeze), we try to avoid leaving them out in the cold.  Some people opt to have their tulips delivered to their workplace instead of home.  Others coordinate a "frost free delivery location", such as a heated garage.  Others have a family member receive the flowers for them.  We can get creative to keep the flowers at an ideal temperature!

If you're going on vacation, or will be out of town, communicate with me ahead of time (at least 24 hours notice), and we can figure out a solution.  In some cases, we can easily skip a week and add one more bouquet on at the end of the season.  Sometimes, the subscriber decides to designate that bouquet to someone else within our delivery area.  And sometimes we are asked to donate their bouquet to a local nursing home or charity.

The key is to communicate with plenty of time, and we figure it out!

7.  How many stems are in each bouquet?  Do the tulips come in a vase?

Each bouquet contains ten stems of tulips.  All bouquets are wrapped in floral paper and include flower food and vase life instructions. A vase is not included.

8.  What color/varieties of tulips will I receive?

We force a wide variety of tulips-- singles, doubles, parrots, and fringes-- in several colors.  Every week, we keep track of which varieties we bring you, to ensure that you get a variety of tulip types and colors.  It's the best surprise of the week!
